ABOUT:
I'm Justin, and I am just-in-credibly excited you're here. I am a student researcher, photographer, and musician based in Boulder, Colorado.
I am currently attending CU Boulder and will graduate in May 2025 with BAs in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Visual Art (Photo Emphasis). I will also graduate with minors in Biochemistry, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, and Art History.
Photography
Even as a young kid, I loved cameras, taking pictures, and sharing them with my friends. In 2016, one of my photos was selected through a National Geographic program to be on display at Vice President Joe Biden's house, and in 2019, I was one of 30 finalists in a National Geographic Expeditions photo contest. Between those achievements, I started my first portrait business, Divide Visuals (est. 2018). I’m currently a Visual Art Practices major at CU, with an emphasis in Photography, and I’m a product photographer and photography manager at Excel Sports, a local cycling shop.
I’m passionate about photography education and community. In high school, I led the photography club for three years. At CU, I re-founded the photography club after the pandemic and was president for three years. I write guides for PetaPixel, one of the leading online photography resources. In 2018, after realizing there wasn’t really a photography summer camp for kids in the Boulder area, I founded Camp Photo, a photography camp for young people. I taught that for five summers, and I continue to teach small classes and workshops.
Biology
My love for biology goes back to most of my summer days as a kid. I grew up in east Boulder, where I would often be outside with a net looking for bugs, reptiles, amphibians, and who knows what else. In fifth grade, I convinced my parents to get a beehive so that we could learn how to keep bees as a family. Presently, I work in the Boulder Bee Lab studying bees and bee parasites. I am the Biology Instructor for CU Upward Bound, a program designed to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Other
I have a section for music on this website because it’s something I’m proud of that I really enjoy. I’ve played mandolin in two different bluegrass-ish bands and I play double bass in various orchestras. I love how interactive, relaxing, and mindful music is.
Cycling and hiking are my two favorite activities, and most of my summer free time involves one or both. Whistling is my hidden talent, so you should ask me to do it sometime.
